Treatment for Genital pain

This study is investigating the effectiveness of two different non-medical treatment options for women who have genital pain during intercourse. Participation involves pre-treatment testing including a gynaecological examination, an interview and completion of questionnaires, as well as a genital testing and pelvic floor muscle assessment. Eligible women will be randomly selected to complete eight sessions of either cognitive-behavioural therapy or pelvic floor physiotherapy over a twelve week period. One month and six months following treatment completion, women will complete the same testing that was completed pre-treatment.

All treatment is provided free of charge and compensation is provided.

Online Personality Study

This online study is looking at personality characteristics of individuals willing to participate in various sexuality-based research studies. You will not be required to actually participate in any of the studies proposed; they are hypothetical situations. This study includes questions concerning demographics, sexual history, willingness to participate in various sexual studies, and the completion of a personality instrument. Men and women of all sexual orientations are invited to participate, and a weekly draw will take place for $50.00

Online Relationships Study

This online study examines relationships, social support and health. The study involves the completion of a variety of online questionnaires once every three months for a 2-year period. The questionnaires cover topics such as sexuality, physical and mental health, relationship well-being and social support. You will earn participation points for completing the surveys, which you can then use to enter various prize draws for cash, gift certificates, travel, and iPods. You will also have the option of donating your points to charity! This study is open to all individuals over the age of 18 who are fluent in english. Individuals of all sexual orientations and relationship experiences are encouraged to participate. You need not be currently in a relationship to participate in the study.

Measurement of genital pain

This study examines a new tool that has been developed to measure genital pain in women who have and do not have pain during sexual intercourse. The study involves two gynecological examinations and one laboratory session. The laboratory session involves an interview and genital sensory testing while galvanic skin response (GSR) is being measured.

Couple interactions

This study examines couple interactions among women with recurrent pain and their partners. The study includes couples in which a female partner experiences pain during sexual intercourse. Couples in which a female partner experiences migraine headaches and couples in which the female partner experiences no form of chronic pain are also invited to participate in this study. Participation involves the completion of questionnaires and the in-lab video-taped interactions (where you and your partner will be asked to participate in various discussions.

Sexual Arousal & Pain Sensitivity

This study investigates the relationship between sexual arousal and pain sensitivity in women with pain during sexual intercourse, as well as women without such pain. The study involves two sessions: a gynecological examination and a laboratory session. The laboratory session includes an interview, completion of questionnaires, blood flow imaging of the external genitals while watching several films, and genital sensory testing.

Female Sexual Arousal Disorder

This study examines psychosocial and genital blood flow differences between sexually healthy women and women with Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (FSAD). The study involves the completion of an interview, questionnaires pertaining to mental health, sexual functioning and relationship adjustment, as well as the use of a laser doppler imager to measure genital blood flow while watching a sexually explicit film. We are currently recruiting sexually healthy women and women with FSAD who are between the ages of 18 and 30 years and who identify as heterosexual.

Sexual Arousal in Women

This study examines sexual arousal in sexually healthy women using laser doppler imaging, a non-invasive method for measuring blood flow. Participation involves the completion of an interview and questionnaires pertaining to mental health, sexual functioning and relationship adjustment, as well as genital blood flow imaging while watching one of four different films. The film type is randomly assigned and can be neutral, scary, humourous, or sexually explicit. At this time, we are recruiting female participants between 18-30 years of age who identify as heterosexual.

Brain Imaging & Pain Processing Study

This study uses brain imaging to assess pain processing in women with and without pain during sexual intercourse. This study involves attending a gynaecological examination and a laboratory session in which you will take part in an interview, genital sensory testing, and an fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) scanning session.

Online Women’s Health Study

This study is looking at women’s experiences (or lack of experiences) with pelvic examinations. This study includes questions concerning medical, reproductive and sexual history, as well as various psychological measures, including questionnaires of sexual functioning, body image and psychological functioning. All women over the age of 18 are invited to participate in this study, regardless of whether you have had a pelvic exam in the past.
